BMW xDrive  Transmission Service

xDrive Service Explained

This is why you should service your BMW transmission, transfer case, and differentials.

Background

One of the major omissions in the official BMW service schedule is transmission service. BMW does not make transmissions - they use ZF, a transmission manufacturer specialist with a sterling reputation in the industry. They recommend regular filter and oil service for their transmissions, and even sell the supplies. Similar to your engine, the transmission has a bunch of gears spinning at incredible speeds in a bath of oil. And no oil or filter last forever.

Having seen transmission oil and filters at 50K miles, and the consequences of not doing transmission service, we agree with most specialists that transmission oil and filters need to be changed every 50K miles. It also needs frequent maintenance to prolong its life and maintain its performance.

The Issue

There are three main reasons to replace the oil and filter in your BMW transmission:

  • No oil in the world lasts forever - it simply loses its lubricant properties over time.
  • The transmission filter collects impurities
  • There are magnets in the transmission pan, which collect the micro particles of metal that your transmission sheds as part of its normal operation. If the magnets are full of old shavings, where are the new shavings going? Back into the transmission. Over time that will cause transmission failure.

The Service

No BMW dealer we know of offers this service. Some independent shops and transmission shops offer this service, but ours is superior.

Why?

Because we replace fluids in ALL the gearboxes that make up the xDrive system:

  • transmission (fluid and filter),
  • transfer case,
  • and rear and front differentials.

We use ZF fluid and filters for the transmission, and LiquiMoly fluids for transfer case and differentials.
